India’s Rising Power in Global Textile Exports

Strong growth and global recognition place India among the top textile and apparel exporters, with steady demand from the US and EU.

India has always been known for its rich textile heritage, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. Today, this balance is driving India’s global success in textiles and apparel (T&A).

In FY 2023-24, textiles and apparel (including handicrafts) contributed 8.21% of India’s total exports, making the nation the 6th-largest exporter of T&A products worldwide, with a 3.9% share in global trade. The United States and the European Union remain the largest destinations, together accounting for nearly 47% of India’s textile exports.

The momentum continues in the current fiscal year. According to the Government of India, during April–October 2024-25, India’s T&A exports recorded a 7% year-on-year growth compared to the same period in 2023-24. This growth underscores India’s resilience and rising global demand despite dynamic trade challenges.

What makes India stand out is the fusion of scale and sustainability. Centuries-old weaving and artisanal traditions remain at the heart of the industry, while modern manufacturing units adopt eco-friendly practices, compliance standards, and advanced technologies to meet international expectations.

As global markets increasingly shift towards sustainable and ethically sourced textiles, India is well-positioned to lead. With consistent growth, strong trade partners, and innovation at scale, India’s textile sector is weaving a promising future in the global fashion supply chain.
